Weekly Gemstone - Ocean Jasper

Hey everyone, big apologies for no blogs throughout the month. Been really busy and been trying to make new patterns for the website. Let’s talk about this-weeks gemstone!

Ocean jasper is a rare, orbicular variety of jasper celebrated for its vibrant orbs, intricate swirling patterns, and a broad palette that ranges from deep greens and blues to soft pinks, warm creams, and rich browns. Found only along a limited stretch of Madagascar’s northwest coast, true Ocean Jasper forms in rhyolitic volcanic rock and was only rediscovered and brought to wider attention in the 1990s. Its visual complexity, soothing coastal-inspired colorways, and often playful orb motifs make it a perennial favorite among lapidary artists, collectors, and jewelry makers who value both its beauty and intriguing geological story.

Key features

  • Orbicular patterning: Distinct round or eye-like formations (orbs) set against contrasting backgrounds that create striking focal points and natural compositions.

  • Banding and wave-like swirls: Layered bands and undulating swirls add depth and a dynamic, oceanic feel to each piece, often suggesting movement or miniature seascapes.

  • Color range: A varied spectrum including greens, blues, pinks, creams, yellows, browns, and occasional translucent chalcedony zones that catch and diffuse the light in interesting ways.

  • Matte to high polish: Responds beautifully to polishing — from soft satin finishes to glassy high polish — which enhances its natural shine and makes the orbs pop and the colors sing.

  • Rarity: Its limited geographic occurrence increases desirability and value, particularly for large, high-quality slabs, freeforms, and spheres that are prized by collectors.

Uses in jewelry and design

  • Cabochons: The most common cut for showcasing orb patterns in pendants, rings, and brooches, prized for centerpieces that highlight the stone’s natural imagery and lend a distinctive, organic focal point to wearable art.
